As a soup lover, I always feel one can’t have too many soup recipes. I am not a big meat eater – just simply don’t like the taste of meats – so I love a good soup that isn’t meat based. Assuming there are others out there like me, I am choosing to share a good soup recipe that is vegetable based and doesn’t involve meat.
When preparing fresh asparagus for using in a recipe, mot cookbooks and also many TV chefs tell you to snap off the bottom part of the stalk because it’s usually tough and contains hard fibers. Most of these people also discard the leftover pieces. As a great believer in the Benjamin Franklin’s quote that I think comes from his Poor Richard’s Almanac which is “Waste not, want not”, I am hard put to discard anything that can be used.
I grew up in Portland, Oregon, which meant that the Pacific Coast was just a two hour drive away; it was very near, but still too far to go very often. When my family did go, it was always a big deal, and we would pack up the car with beach blankets and towels for laying out on, kites and Frisbees for playing with, and buckets and spades for sand castle construction. We would spend a few hours on the beach, but the Oregon Coast is a chilly place even at the height of summer, and so my favorite part of any trip was heading to one of our favorite restaurants, and warming up with delicious entrees, including delicacies made from the best seafood stew recipes.
This is a variation on the French red onion soup but taste sweeter due to the red onions. This is a very quick and easy soup to make and taste absolutely delicious. Especially with French bread covered with cheese and grilled till browned.
Soup has been a popular foodstuff since around 6000BC. However, its longevity doesn’t mean that the nature of soup and the ways it can be stored or consumed has changed considerably throughout history. Here are the backgrounds on what I consider the “Big 3″ of soups.

I don’t mean to abandon my readers, its just that I’ve been writing up a storm on the Slow Food Nation blog in the past few weeks. Here is the beginning of today’s post on the movie FLOW, a film about the politics of water:
Water is a vital part of life, but should it be a commodity? This is the question FLOW explores, not just in developing countries where the issue seems paramount, but in the United States as well. Water is currently a $400 billion industry, the third largest behind oil and electricity. Because of pollution, scarcity and corporate control, it is the largest issue facing humanity in this century.
Of the 6 billion people on Earth, 1.1 billion do not have access to safe drinking water. In addition, contaminated drinking water kills more humans than AIDS or war. A lack of infrastructure or aging infrastructure that a government can’t afford to upgrade are the leading reasons private companies are invited in to make water distribution deals. But when a private industry, which is beholden to shareholders, gets control of a local water supply, a basic human need, the result is that the community using the water is at risk.
